Stanley Spencer was born in Cookham, Berkshire, and spent the majority of his life there. He is one of Britain’s greatest artists and is famous for his religious and imaginary paintings, as well as his portraits and landscapes. He studied at Maidenhead Technical Institute and the Slade School of Art in London and his brother Gilbert was also an artist. Like many artists, Spencer’s experiences serving in World War I and as an official war artist in World War II, influenced his art. Spencer earned a living from painting landscapes in the 1930s. His subjects painted from nature, as we see here, were an important part of his artistic output.
