On 23 February 2026, the Border Galleries fully closed so work could begin to create an amazing new experience, getting over 100,000 objects from the collections onto display. Although they won’t be changing, the Costume Gallery and Wildlife Dome will also be closed while this work takes place. These temporary closures will make access easier for our staff and contractors and ensure work can take place safely.
We aim to open the transformed space to the public in Summer 2027. In the meantime our exhibitions, events programme and all other galleries will remain open for you to visit.

As a charity, every entrance fee, donation, Friend sign up and events ticket allows us to keep the curious informed and history preserved.
Admission tickets, Friendships and events tickets can be purchased online, over the phone (01228 618718), or from our lovely front desk staff when you get here.

How to find us
You’ll find Tullie in Carlisle’s Historic Quarter, between Carlisle Castle and the Cathedral.
We have entrances on:
- Castle Street -this is the museum’s main entrance, walk through the Gatehouse arch and turn right at the big ‘T’, you can’t miss it. Level access through two sets of automatic doors will then take you to the welcome desk.
- Abbey Street – From this cobbled street you can access our gardens through large wrought iron gates. Then you just need to follow the path through the garden to the main entrance by the big ‘T’. You can also access events in Old Tullie House from here by heading to the white door right after you’ve rounded the first corner in the garden.
Please note, the rotunda entrance on Annetwell Street is no longer in use.
I’m travelling by…
Train
You’ll find us a roughly level 800m from Carlisle Citadel Station. The route is mainly through the pedestrianised city centre. Carlisle is on the West Coast Mainline, so you can easily get here with direct trains from London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham and west Cumbria.
Bus
The closest bus stop to us is the Market Hall on West Tower Street, which is around 320m from Tullie. The main bus station in Carlisle (where a wider range of buses from further afield and coaches stop) is 640m from us.
Car
We don’t have our own car park, but we are very near to Castle Car Park on Devonshire Walk. The post code is CA3 8AN.
Bike
At the moment bike parking is limited to bicycle racks at the Castle end of Castle Street
Can I bring my dog?
We love dogs as much as the next personified cultural organisation, however only service dogs are allowed in the museum.
This is in order to better protect the objects in our care from pests that may hitch a ride on your furry friend. We care for lots of textiles and taxidermy, which are particularly vulnerable to creatures like carpet beetles.
Sorry if this is disappointing, but we hope you understand. Please note this doesn’t mean we think your dog is anything other than a very good boy/girl.
