Remarkable Victorian art and Tullie’s Art Group responses

Tullie is thrilled to have acquired these gorgeous works of art courtesy of an anonymous loan. Because we love them so much, our very own Art Group got a sneaky peak of what was coming.

Inspired by Grimshaw and Rossetti and under the guidance of super-talented local artist David Hollins the group has put their own spin on these Victorian paintings.

We enjoyed experimenting with David’s signature style to emanate the atmospheric light and colour of self-taught artist Grimshaw.

Ford Madox Brown

This display features two works by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Ford Madox Brown who was commissioned by Manchester Corporation in 1878 to paint a series of murals about the history of Manchester for the new Town Hall. For Brown this fulfilled his life-long ambition to be a mural painter. However, the project was a massive undertaking. He suffered ill health and only managed to complete all twelve murals just six months before he died in 1893.

Frederic Leighton

Leighton became one of Britain’s most famous Victorian artists and had an international reputation. He painted portraits and produced book illustrations but is best known for his sumptuous paintings of classical Greek subjects. Leighton House, his lavishly decorated London home, is a museum dedicated to his life and work.
