Bough returned to a subject close to his heart at the end of his life. This painting of Carlisle in the distance was certified as being Bough’s final work after his death. The painting shows Carlisle’s skyline from the west under a showery sky viewed from Newtown Road. Bough used this location previously in his major painting ‘Baggage Waggons Approaching Carlisle’, also on display, which he painted 29 years earlier. This painting brought the young Bough great critical acclaim and marked a turning point in his artistic career. In this final painting we are left wondering about Bough’s intentions for the still empty road which leads our eye to the city.
