Pom-pom Positivity

We want your pom-poms!

Taking inspiration from our vibrant new exhibition, Colour: A season of shades, tints and tones, we’re undertaking a fun, colourful and mindful project. Our plan is to collect pom-poms of all colours for a special display to brighten up the museum (and our lives) in the sometimes-dreary month of January.

How can I get involved?

If for whatever reason you have some pom-poms lying around at home, feel free to bring them to the museum where we’ll have a designated pom-pom drop-off point. If you don’t already have pom-poms, we’ll have some pom-pom making kits available in Café Tullie.

What if I don’t know how to make a pom-pom?

Fear not, we’ve put together an instructional video with some helpful guidance from Abi, which you can watch below or to the right.

How to make a pom-pom step-by-step

Or if you’d prefer to read instructions, here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Take the tail from a ball of wool and begin to wrap it around your fingers. You want to aim to wind the wool about 100 times (but who’s counting, eh?).
  • You should end up with a nice thick band of wool wrapped around your fingers, be careful not to wrap the wool too tightly as you now need to slide the wool from your fingers, making sure it stays in a ring shape as you lay it down.
  • Take a small length of wool and use this to secure your pom-pom. Tie it horizontally across your woollen ring. You will see that it has created two sides of woollen loops.
  • Take the scissors and cut through the middle of these loops to create fluffy strands. Watch as your pom-pom takes shape before our eyes.
  • Use the scissors to trim the strands so they are all an even length, creating a uniform shape as you go, then toss the pom-pom between your hands to fluff it up.
