As we move into 2026, we’re excited to share some big changes as part of Project Tullie. This next step in the on-going redevelopment work will mark an exciting new chapter for us and for everyone who loves Tullie.
From 12 January, parts of the Border Galleries will close as we begin the next stage of the National Lottery Heritage Fund funded project, Breaking Down Barriers. The railway carriages, badger tunnel, terrain areas and access routes to the Wildlife Dome and Costume Gallery will remain open at this stage, though some areas will be temporarily out of bounds.
From 23 February, the Border Galleries will fully close. Although they won’t be changing, the Costume Gallery and Wildlife Dome will also close at this point. These temporary closures will make access easier for our staff and contractors and ensure work can take place safely as we transform the Border Galleries to create an amazing new experience, getting over 100,000 objects from the collection out onto display.
The good news is that plenty remains open and waiting for you. You can still explore the Roman Gallery, our Gladiators and Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibitions, Old Tullie House, the Pre-Raphaelites gallery, and our newest gallery celebrating Carlisle.
Our shop is open as usual, with gifts, books and locally sourced treats, and Café Tullie will be serving your favourite home-baked goodies and hearty meals. All our much-loved family activities, events and community programmes will continue too. There’s still a huge amount going on!
Our lovely front of house team (and volunteer gallery engagers) will be on hand throughout to help you navigate the changes and make the most of your visit.
We know that the Border Galleries have meant so much to so many people. We’d love you to share your photos and favourite memories with us as we celebrate what’s been and look ahead to what’s coming next. Look out for a celebratory campaign to mark this treasured and nostalgic space coming soon.
