Woman UP Colour Reel

Following the success of our previous film-screening of ‘Polystyrene: I am A Cliche’ about Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex – we collaborated with Woman UP to curate another inspiring event as part of the wider Colour programme.

Together, we chose a powerful and visually striking film exploring the life of celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo as we felt while Kahlo is widely recognised for her distinctive artistic style, many audience members were less familiar with the deeply personal story behind her work — including how disability shaped her life, how creativity became a tool for healing, and how she lived openly as a queer woman in a challenging historical context.

The film’s rich and vibrant cinematography beautifully echoed the themes of the Colour programme, immersing audiences in a visual world as bold and expressive as Kahlo’s artwork itself.

At the same time, the film offered thoughtful insights into gender inequality, identity, resilience, and the transformative power of art as a form of therapy and self-expression — themes that resonate strongly with Tullie’s commitment to inclusive, socially engaged programming.

The screening not only celebrated an iconic artist but also created space for Woman UP and attendees to have meaningful conversations around creativity, representation, and the power of storytelling through film.

Many people shared how much they enjoyed it on their way out, and a group stayed afterwards for a lively discussion around the table. Several attendees said they hadn’t known much about Frida Kahlo and were completely captivated by her life and art. People were also keen to learn more about Woman UP and asked about future screenings and how they could get involved. It was a lovely evening with fantastic feedback all round.”
