One of the most significant objects in the museum collection will be back on display in a special spotlight exhibition.

This incredibly rare violin is almost 500 years old, made in 1564 by famed Italian luthier Andrea Amati (c. 1505 – 1577). Despite being hundreds of years old, 2026 marks only 20 years since it was last played, recordings of which will be playing within the exhibition.

Andrea Amati is credited with making the first instrument recognised as a modern violin. This particular violin was part of a set of instruments for King Charles IX of France, the set was separated during the French Revolution with this violin being later acquired by Sybil Mounsey-Heysham of Rockliffe, who donated it to the museum in 1949.

Viewing the Amati violin is included with an annual pass, day ticket and free for Tullie Friends and Patrons. Find it in The Study in Old Tullie House, open 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-4pm Sundays.
