This painting of Sandaig in Ross-shire on the west coast of Scotland was one of the most important places for Winifred Nicholson. She stayed there many times throughout the 1950s with her friend, the poet Kathleen Raine. They rented a small croft from the writer Gavin Maxwell, which also inspired Camusfeàrna in his Ring of Bright Water Trilogy.
Winifred Nicholson is a major British artist and one of Cumbria’s most important artists of the 20th century. She was the granddaughter of George Howard, Ninth Earl of Carlisle, major artist and Pre-Raphaelite patron. She was born in Oxford and studied at the Byam School of Art in London and Paris. She married the artist Ben Nicholson in 1920 and in 1924 purchased a Cumbrian farmhouse close to Hadrian’s Wall. She embraced European modernism and exhibited widely. After the war Cumbria became her permanent home. Her work is represented in numerous public collections
