Sheila Fell is one of Cumbria’s most important 20th century artists. She was born in Aspatria where her father worked as a miner and her mother was a seamstress. Although Fell’s family were poor she wanted to be an artist and trained at Carlisle College of Art. To further her artistic career, she moved to London where she lived the rest of her tragically short life. She returned home regularly, often with her friend and fellow artist L S Lowry, to paint her beloved Cumberland landscape which inspired all her paintings. This painting is typical of her work. She applied her paint thickly similar to artists Cezanne, Van Gogh and Frank Auerbach. The museum has several paintings and drawings by Fell in the collection.
