Kate Nicholson was born in Cumbria and is the daughter of artist Ben Nicholson and his first wife, artist Winifred Nicholson. Kate briefly studied at Carlisle College of Art and Camberwell and subsequently at Bath College of Art (1949-1954). But she learnt most about painting from her parents. She moved to St Ives in 1957 and became an associate member of the Penwith Society. She painted landscapes, still lives and abstract works. She travelled with her mother to paint in Greece, Cumbria and the Hebrides in the 1960s and 1970s. She captured these locations, as can be seen in this example, in an individual and distinctive painting style using vivid colours. Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District might have inspired this painting.
