Peter de Francia was born in Beaulieu, France, and trained in Brussels and at the Slade School of Art in London. He had a distinguished career teaching painting including at the Royal College of Art and was a passionate socialist. His French upbringing made him well placed to absorb artistic trends from Italy, France, and Spain through artists like Picasso. In this painting we see de Francia’s distinctive colourful abstract style used to capture this jagged landscape with two people sitting under the shade of a gnarled tree.
