Roger de Grey had a distinguished career teaching painting, and was President of the Royal Academy from 1984 to 1993. He was also the fourth and final honorary advisor to Tullie House’s Purchase Scheme – he bought 62 artworks for the collection including works by fellow staff and students at the Royal College of Art. De Grey specialised in landscape painting. This picture depicts the landscape around Little Buckland near Broadway in Gloucestershire. It shows how De Grey’s style had changed 11 years after painting ‘Horton cum Studley’ (also displayed). Here he has simplified the landscape with bold blocks of paint in a modern abstract style.
