William Cowper’s self portrait was painted at his home at Penistone Road, Huddersfield. He has cleverly incorporated the Art Deco mirror his image is reflected in resting on a windowsill; with an apple, pencil and jewellery placed in front. Cowper was born in Greystoke near Penrith and attended Carlisle College of Art where he painted one of the murals for what is now Tullie’s Reading Room. Cowper also studied at the Royal College of Art and taught at Huddersfield Polytechnic for 30 years.
