George Vernon Stokes was born in London and was mostly self-taught. In addition to painting, Stokes created his own colour printing method. He is best known for his animal and natural history subjects, especially dogs, which illustrated magazines and sporting publications. Stokes moved near Carlisle in 1911, living at Crosby on Eden then Irthington before returning south to Kent in 1930. The museum has a large collection of his paintings and prints featuring a wide variety of animals, especially dogs and birds.
