This painting includes objects the artist found or collected over the years which she kept in her studio to use in her paintings. The assorted objects include some fruit in an elaborate glass bowl, various boxes and the Star of David. Some objects were gifts from friends and others caught Blackadder’s eye because of their shape or colour.
Elizabeth Blackadder is a major Scottish artist and was the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy of Arts. She is well known for her paintings and prints of flowers and cats. She also produced landscapes, townscapes, still life and portraits. She was born in Falkirk and studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University. She married fellow artist John Houston and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. She exhibited widely and her work is represented in numerous public collections.
