Becky Sharp (1935) is a landmark piece of colour cinema – the first feature film to use three-strip Technicolor production throughout. An adaptation of Langdon Mitchell’s 1899 play of the same name, itself a spin on William Makepeace Thackery’s 1848 novel Vanity Fair.
Directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring Miriam Hopkins as the titular character, Becky Sharp centres on a young woman’s ambition to climb the social ladder during the tail end of the Napoleonic Wars.
