John Mather celebrates Carlisle’s fascinating history by talking about his illustrated guide to the city, titled: “DISCOVER CARLISLE, WALKING THROUGH THE CITY’S HISTORY”.

As well as featuring two walking trails that showcase the city’s heritage, architecture and people, the guide includes forty-four pages of hand drawn black and white illustrations.  These detail route plans, directions, historical buildings and interesting facts.

John delves into the city’s remarkable heritage that includes a twelfth century cathedral, formidable castle, award winning museum & gallery and historical buildings.  But, the less said about Bonny Prince Charlie declaring his father the King of Great Britain beside the Market Cross in 1745, even though George the Second was on the throne, the better.

Lunchtime Talks are completely free, but spaces are limited so booking is advised.

Please note that there is no Lunchtime Talk in January 2026 – we are taking a festive break.
