During the Roman occupation of Britain, Carlisle was a garrison town and may have housed substantial detachments of legionaries. Could the enigmatic Kirksteads altar, dedicated by the commanding officer of the VIth Legion, point a finger to a major assault on a hillfort north of Carlisle in the second century AD? John Reid, chair of Trimontium Trust, considers the historical context and the archaeological evidence.
